BGMC/GVI Now Offers Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Colonoscopies

Kaleida Health and Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute (BGMC/GVI) announces the integration of GI Genius™ Intelligent Endoscopy Module, a state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) technology, into its gastrointestinal (GI) screening and diagnostic procedures. This pioneering advancement aims to significantly enhance the early detection of precancerous polyps, further underscoring Kaleida Health's dedication to providing the best in patient care.

GI GeniusThe GI Genius™ module, developed by Medtronic, is the first FDA-cleared AI-assisted technology designed to work in real-time during colonoscopies. By assisting physicians in identifying potentially precancerous polyps, GI Genius™ serves as an invaluable tool in improving the overall accuracy and efficiency of colonoscopies. BGMC/GVI is only hospital in the Western New York region to offer Metronic’s first-to-market computer-aided polyp detection system.

Mayada Ismail, MD, a gastroenterologist at BGMC/GVI, General Physician, PC and UBMD Physicians’ Group was one of the first physicians to employ the new technology.

"This innovative tool is a game-changer in the field of gastroenterology, allowing us to detect precancerous polyps more efficiently and accurately. By embracing cutting-edge technologies like GI Genius, we are reinforcing our commitment to providing our patients with the highest standard of care."

Colorectal cancer is the third most common form of cancer diagnosed in the U.S., with more than 150,000 new cases every year. According to a recent study published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, the flagship journal of the American Cancer Society, colon and rectal cancers have become leading causes of cancer death in younger adults for the first time. The incidence of colon cancer has been rising for at least the last two decades and is currently the third-leading cause of cancer death for both men and women under 50.

“Early detection is essential to preventing colorectal cancer, but polyps can be difficult to see, and physicians vary in their ability to detect and remove polyps,” adds Dr. Ismail. “The GI Genius module uses advanced visualization and AI software to highlight polyps in real-time.”
